Greetings! Welcome to my website. My name is Elena Mairs and I am in my second year in the elementary education program at UVic. I was born in Mexico and have grown up here going through the public school system all throughout my life. Last year during my first year in university, I really connected in the classes where they was in a smaller setting. When I was thrown into a science class with up to 300 people it was a challenge to connect with those around me and the teacher which led to me feeling behind in my studies and abilities.

This year, being in a cohort structured program, I’ve had the opportunity to really get to know the individuals around me and their experiences and backgrounds. I am grateful to be surrounded by people who are passionate about the same topics as I am; it is impactful being in a classroom setting with 30 other aspiring teachers. The student teacher relationships are also much more impactful as there is more of a face to face connection, similar to high school classes.

I have always been someone who thrives off of interactions with people whether it was at work speaking with customers, at dance teaching students or with my friends having a casual conversation. I receive energy from those around me and from the interactions we carry day to day. This is why I would love to be a teacher. I can’t think of many other jobs were so many relationships are formed within such a short span of time.  Growing up a dancer, I enjoy leading groups through activities and putting myself out there. In this class I hope to gain skills and learn how use technology to elevate my teaching in the future.
